the playing is simply sublime. i am an avid sitar player, but this record made me very curious about playing the veena. there is such a different expressive capacity with this instrument than the sitar possesses.

rao gently coaxes this raga into form, occasionally piercing its skin like a knife in water. one can hear his ample devotion and beautiful intentions in this recording. check out other barclay records recordings also, most of those that i’ve found are pretty top notch. thanks also to the amazing crocodisc employee who greatly aided my digging!

I was given this record by a former record dealing friend in la that makes amazing analog visuals with vintage equipment. he gave me a number of wonderful and rare records, but this one resonated with me the most of all of them. i posted it once before when electropeasant was a different blog, not solely dedicated to rare spiritual vinyl, but it needs to see circulation again! this record is not for sale was created by ram dass and the lama foundation in the early 70s and released in 1971 by elektra. it was part of the box set ‘from bindu to ojas‘ which later became the famous book ‘be here now’. the whole box set was available by mail for free and supported by donations given to the lama foundation, which is still active in new mexico. this record was my introduction to kirtan singing and to the mantras contained within it, which i repeat from time to time. it’s a beautiful experience, highly recommended for the spiritual wayfarer. dass later referred to the recording as sounding more like a home recording, but it is exactly this quality that i find so enveloping. the name of the box set refers to one’s chakras, bindu being the lowest/red chakra at the base of the spine, and ojas being the highest/white chakra at the top of the head.

electropeasant has held many different forms over it’s tenure. it was conceived of as a magazine, changed to a blog, became yet another blog and is now a music blog for rare spiritual and various world musics. i will attempt to post only the rarest items from my collection. this record we picked up in amsterdam at an outdoor record sale in a public square. the music is a bit different than we expected, sounding similar to other field recordings from the 60s/70s that i have from the middle east. enjoy this 320 rip!
